Hi everybody, I'm building one Icefaces application (v1.8.2) with ajax push using the interval render.

When I deployed the application on the pre-production enviroment I receveid one message from the QA team telling about problems with Session Expired messages.

Looking at the log I was surprised to see that there were 40.000 Threads Stack Traces with the SessionExpiredException on they.

Looking at the code it seems that the Interval Render is creating threads to update pages (views) from users that have they session expired. Analysing more I saw that RunnableRender.run have one method (testSession) that is executed only for seam enviroments and that this method trys to call Session.getAttributes(). But the Session object is one ProxyHttpSession from Icefaces that catch the original IllegalStateException (for which the run method have one catch block) and wrap it into one SessionExpiredException that is not expected int the run method. This cause the Thread to die with this exception.

Can I classify this as a Icefaces Bug?

Have anyone faced this problem?

Enviroment: JBoss Seam 2.2.0; Icefaces 1.8.2; Tomcat 6.0.29 / Weblogic 10.3.2

Thanks in advance,
Bruno.

PS: Just want to know, there will be one 1.8.3 release of icefaces?
Hi all,

We are building one stock price watch application using ICEfaces ajax push features. During the development we found a strange behavior with some components (ice:menuBar, ice:popupPanel, ice:selectInputText).

ICEFaces is sending push updates to the client even when the "model" (managed beans to which those components attributes have some assignment) isn't updated.

We use another ICEfaces components (ice:dataTable, ice:panelGrid, ice:inputText, ...) in the application and they are updated correctly (only when the "model" beans are updated).

Bellow are some samples of the response of the http requests showing this issue:

Has someone already seen this behavior?

I have attached a screen capture of FireBug showing the requests.

The environment we are using:

Browser: Firefox 3.6.4

IceFaces 1.8.2

JBoss Seam 2.2.0

JVM:
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08)
BEA JRockit(R) (build R27.6.5-32_o-121899-1.6.0_14)

Server: SunOS server-bea 5.10 Generic_120011-14 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-15000

Anyone can help? Thanks in advance!
Hi PankajS,

We faced the same problem (High CPU Utilization) with ICEFaces in another scenario, using it's ajax push feature.

In our case we were using OnDemandRenderer to push stock updates to our clients. We find out that the load of stock updates in real time(calling OnDemandRenderer.requestRender 10 to 30 times/second) make the server CPU usage goes to 90% and the client browser unresponsive.

It seems that the server spend a lot of resources computing the DOM updates and browser spend too much time parsing them.

To give you one idea of what happened, when we interact with the interface (the web app) it get a lot of time (from 10 to 20 seconds) to make the request to the sever.

In our case, we "solved" this by replacing OnDemandRenderer with a IntervalRenderer with updates going to the client every 2 seconds. This makes the server CPU usage drop to 35%. This isn't the best approach but we didn't find another way at the moment.

Another interesting find analyzing the behavior of ICEFaces ajax push is that some ICEFaces components (ice:menuBar, ice:popupPanel, ice:selectInputText) push updates to the client even when they "model" (managed beans to which they attributes have some assignment) weren't updated.

Bellow are some samples of the response of the http requests showing this issue:

How do you guys, that haven't IcePack, do load test in ajax push applications?

Thanks for the help,
Bruno.
Hi everybody,

I'm developing one home broker application with icefaces using it's ajax push feature.

I'm a little concerned about the scalability of this application. The architecture of icefaces with the Direct-to-DOM mechanism using server side mirrored DOM made me think about memory consumption on server for 5000+ users.

I saw the ICEpack offer that talks about load test in ajax push applications, but right now it isn't an option for me. And I already tried to figure out how to test ajax push feature (JMeter, HtmlUnit,...), but do not suceeded.

So I'm here to get some input from the community. Have anyone already developed applications with ajax push for this load? There is anything that we must be aware? Can anyone share some insights?

Another think that I'm worring about is the frequency of stock quote updates, there are 3 messages / sec on average, I mean, 3 partial screen updates / sec, this is much?

Thanks in advance for any information,
Bruno.
Hi everybody,

I saw at icefaces docs (http://www.icefaces.org/main/ajax-java/portals.iface) that it's possible to use Ajax push feature in portal configuration.

I just want to know if the integration with Seam (in a portal with icefaces using ajax push) will work on such a environment.

Thanks,
Bruno
Hi averas, what kind of errors are you getting? What is the runtime environment (server)?

I tried it a while ago with ICEFaces 1.8.2 and Seam 2.2.0 on tomcat 6.0.20 and it worked.

Right now, I'm having problems with ajax push with IE8, with firefox 3.5.5 everything works fine, but with IE it has a strange behavior, the first update (ajax-push) works, but the following ones didn't.

I found in the ICEFaces Jira that last year they have developed a version of auctionMonitor with seam (http://jira.icefaces.org/browse/ICE-1676), but I can't find it.

Can anyone of ICEFaces tell us if that sample is still available and where to find if?

Between, have anyone seen problems with ajax-push (Using RenderManager API) and IE8?

Thanks,
Bruno.
Hi Newlukai,

Trying to solve the problem I had yesterday (JBoss loop on deploy), I switched to Tomcat 6.0.20 and imported the 'lib' dir of seam into my WEB-INF/lib. Doing this I figured out that my app only works if the richfaces jar files aren't in the lib dir together with icefaces.jar files.

So, I think that it may be necessary that you isolate icefaces.jar files and richfaces.jar files to have your app runing. You may try to deploy both as separeted war/ear files to see if they run as you expect.

Hope this help,
Bruno.
Hi all,

I'm facing a strange problem when trying to deploy one Icefaces + Seam application generated throught seam-gen.
When I call the "explode" target on the project build.xml file, ant copy the contents of the application to the "deploy" directory on the server and JBoss starts to deploy.
The problem is that it does not finish the deploy process and restart it(the process of deploy).
It does not generate exception on the JBoss console, just a lot of messages of the deploy process.
