ICEsoft technology drives Swiss Customs Portal
The Swiss Federal Customs Office goes online with ICEsoft technology

CALGARY, Alberta — February 28, 2005 — Replacing a manual and time-consuming process for customs officers, ICEsoft Technologies Inc., the leading provider of Java browser and Web access software, has been adopted by “Tares”, the Swiss electronic tariff portal. Tares will use ICEbrowser and ICEpdf to drive its principal client interface.

Tares, short for “tarif electronique Suisse” is a Customs Office portal that quotes import and export tariffs to commercial and consumer users. This replaces a manual and arduous process in which customs officers were required to consult a number of rate books for each customer inquiry. With Tares, this quotation burden is shifted to the end user, requiring the Customs office to simply maintain a back-office data base.

Tares was implemented as a Web application using a Struts framework. One key requirement was to minimize client-side coding and invest development resources on the server-side application. As a result, a Java-browser implementation made the most sense. ICEbrowser was used to create the client-side application and ICEpdf allows for seamless PDF viewing of rate sheets and support documents.

“We evaluated a number of client rendering alternatives, and ICEsoft technology was by far the most versatile,” said Ivo Bieri, software project manager at the development division of Bundesamt für Informatik und Telekommunikation (BIT). “ICEsoft allowed us to implement a seamless client solution and focus our development attention on the server-side application. ICEbrowser was easy to implement and ICEpdf supported all our existing PDF references without modification,” said Bieri. “I’ll further add that ICEsoft support was knowledgeable and responsive allowing us to turn development revs quickly.”
