I would like to know how to use ICEfaces with client initated page updates. I wish to avoid server intitiated for various reasons.

Can anyone describe a good solution.

Kind regards,
Callum.

Callum,

One of the key features of ICEfaces is the asynchronous server-initiated updates without resorting to polling. If your application has specific update requirements there is a variety of GroupAsyncRenderer implementations available (On demand, Interval, Delayed) that might align with your requirements. See "GroupAsyncRenderer Implementations" on pg. 36 of the ICEfaces Community Edition Developer's Guide for details, or click here for the online version.

Can you expand in detail the reasons for your reluctance to use server-initiated rendering?

My reluctance to use server initiated rendering stems from a (possibly mistaken?) understanding that the technique relies on using an 'always open' HTTP request and a corresponding extra server port per user. That would probably be an unacceptable design requirement in this case.

Can you confirm that my understanding is correct?

Regardless of the legitimacy of my concern, can you please indicate a solution that does not involve server initiated rendering? I would like to have the option and be in control of the decision to go with it or not.

Many thanks,
Callum.

Should I assume that server initiated update is the only way automated updates can be made?

That would be a good assumption. Our energies are dedicated to providing enterprise-scalable server-initiated rendering capabilities. The Enterprise Edition provide an Asynchronous HTTP server that does connection management with a configurable thread pool. Look for a new release this week.

Let us know if provides what you need. It is unlikely that we will pursue a polling technique any time soon.
